 Tsunami Awareness Day 


The word 'tsunami' is originated basically from japanese language which means harbour wave. Tsunami is a series of huge and tall waves caused due to earthquakes, underwater volcanic eruptions and landslides, etc. Tsunami are very fast and can travel a long distance, Tsunami are very fast in the deep water and gradually slower in the shallow water areas. The approximately or average speed of a tsunami is calculated to be 800km/hrs, the height of which can vary from 20ft. to 100ft. Around 80% of tsunamis appear in the pacific ocean. 

Tsunami are very rare but are very deadly. In the past 100 years, around 58 tsunami were observed which took around 2.6 lakh of lives of people. The deadliest tsunami was recorded in December 2004 in Indian Ocean. Around 2.27 lakh people lost their lives in the crisis.


After that crisis the United Nations General Assembly declared 5 November as the Tsunami Awareness Day to spread awareness among the people living in the low lying regions or those who live near the coastal region. From then the UN is continuously creaating awareness in people about the natural calamity and are helping people who have faced such problems, helps people to migrate to safer areas in the crisis condition, etc. 

This Tsunami Awareness Day the NSS UNIT OF KELKAR COLLEGE wants to make people living in the coastal regions to be aware of the steps to take in the natural calamity conditions like tsunami. 


Follow the steps to ensure safety from tsunami :


🔹During the earthquake drop, cover and hold until it stops.


🔹Gather your resources and pets if any.


🔹Climb to high regions at least 100 ft. From sea level.


🔹Listen carefully to the emergency news by the radio station or by news from local officers. 


🔹If you see a wave coming in your direction, 


🔹evacuate to a safe place. 

Evacuate as per the guidance given. 


🔹Avoid contact with the drowned power lines.


🔹Stay away from the region until officials give any orders as the next waves can be more larger than the first. 


By following these steps you will be able to safeguard yourself and your family.
